- Where and how may I request an application to become a City of Miami Police Officer?
Applications are available at the Employment Office (Room 129) at the City of Miami Riverside Center located at 444 SW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33130. Applications are also available online at: www.miamigov.com/employment.
The following documentation must be presented with your application for Police Officer:
- Scores for the Florida Basic Ability Test (FBAT) in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice Basic Ability Test (CJBAT) in Law Enforcement, or the FDLE Police Examination
- Valid Driver's License (from any State equivalent to a State of Florida Class E Driver’s License)
- High School Diploma or GED (accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education)
- Proof of United States of America citizenship (birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or valid United States passport)
- Military Discharge Documentation (Form DD 214)
- Correspondence from the Veteran's Administration or Department of Defense (not more than 1 year old) indicating the percentage of disability -- if Disabled Veteran Employment Preference is being claimed.
- How will I be notified that I should take the City of Miami’s Civil Service?
Examination? The City of Miami Department of Employee Relations will notify each applicant by mail as to the location, date and time of the Police Officer's examination once all documentation has been submitted and the applicant is deemed eligible.
- Is there an application fee to take the Civil Service Examination?
In the City of Miami there is no charge to take the Police Officer's Examination.
- What are the residency requirements to be a City of Miami Police Officer?
The Miami Police Department does not have a residency requirement.
- What is the application process to become a City of Miami Police Officer?
The initial step in becoming a City of Miami Police Officer is passing the FBAT in Law Enforcement and completing the application form with the required documents. Subsequently, successful completion of the written Civil Service examination will be required. Information concerning the Civil Service Examination is provided to all applicants when the completed application is delivered. Applicants that successfully complete the Civil Service Examination will participate in the following hiring process phases:
- Orientation
- Polygraph Examination – All applicants are required to take a polygraph examination. The polygraph examination is administered at no charge to the applicant.
- Physical Agility (Police Officer applicants only) Applicants will have three (3) opportunities to pass the following physical agility tasks: Tasks Time Required to Pass 300-Meter Run 6-Foot Wall Climb Window Entry 5-Foot Chain Link Fence Climb Body Drag Vehicle Push 1.5-Mile Run

- Psychological Evaluation (Police Officer and Communications Operator applicants only) All applicants are required to take a psychological examination. The psychological examination is administered by the Department’s psychological consultant at no charge to the applicant.
- Background Investigation – The applicant processing staff will conduct a thorough background investigation on all applicants.
- Personal Interview – Applicants must demonstrate their ability to effectively communicate in a structured interview process, which requires the applicant to respond to common police scenarios.
- Conditional Offer of Employment
- Toxicology Examination (Drug Test) – All applicants must submit to a toxicology examination administered by a company selected by the City of Miami.
- Complete Medical Examination – All applicants must submit to a medical physical examination by our physician. There is no charge for this physical examination.
- When is the next Police Officer recruitment anticipated?
The dates for the next Police Officer recruitment will be announced by the City of Miami Department of Employee Relations. Keep checking our website at www.miamigov.com/employment or our job hotline at (305) 416-2050.
- Will study sessions be available before the Civil Service examination is administered? If so, how do I sign-up?
Study sessions are scheduled when the City of Miami Department of Employee Relations begins accepting applications for the Police Officer examination. Study sessions are highly recommended and are scheduled on first com, first serve basis. Should you sign up for a study session, please note that it shall be your personal responsibility to record the date and time of your appointment, as reminder notices will not be provided.
If you are an applicant who has mailed your application in, once you have confirmed that we have received your completed application, call the City of Miami Employment Office at 305-416-2170 to schedule a study session for the Civil Service Examination.
- What are the age requirements to take the Civil Service examination?
An applicant must be 19 years of age by the first day the Civil Service Examination is administered for the current Police Officer job announcement. For example, if the dates of the Civil Service Examination are October 6, 7, and 8, 2008; an applicant must be 19 years of age by October 6, 2008.
- What are the age requirements to be hired as a Police Officer?
You must be at least 19 years of age to be hired as a Police Officer in the City of Miami.
- How many times may I take the Civil Service examination?
Applicants may take the Civil Service Examination as often as they care to, however there must be at least 6 months between examinations.
- Where are the Civil Service Examinations held?
Applicants will be notified by mail as to the location, date and time of the Civil Service examination.
- Are there any education requirements to be appointed as a City of Miami Police Officer?
Yes. Applicants must possess a High School diploma or equivalent from a school that is accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Can prior law enforcement experience be considered towards appointment as a City of Miami Police Officer?
If you have prior law enforcement experience, you may meet the requirements to apply as a City of Miami Certified Police Officer. For additional information, contact the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). - Does the City of Miami Police Department accept lateral transfers from other police departments?
The City of Miami Police Department welcomes State of Florida certified officers. Interested applicants must apply during open recruitment periods for “Certified Police Officer”. Applicants with prior law enforcement experience may qualify for advanced appointment rates in accordance with the FOP labor agreement.
- Are there any citizenship requirements to be a City of Miami Police Officer?
All applicants for the City of Miami Police Department must be a United States citizen.
- Do I need a Florida Driver's License to be a City of Miami Police Officer?
Yes, an operator’s license equivalent to a State of Florida Class E is required. A Florida Driver's License is not required to apply for the position of Police Officer. A driver’s license from any state can be submitted with the application form. However, by the date of hire you must possess a valid, unrestricted State of Florida Driver's License (Class E).
- If I have a criminal record, am I eligible to be a City of Miami Police Officer?
An applicant’s criminal record will be reviewed, and a decision will be based on a case by case basis.
- What is the career path to become a detective?
At the City of Miami Police Department, the career path to become a detective begins with three years in the patrol units. Applicants for detective positions must have above average personnel evaluations, a favorable work history, a favorable Internal Affairs profile, as well as a good driving record. As detective positions become available, the applicant may apply and be interviewed for the position.
