Juvenile Investigations
For the young offender in Miami, the Miami Police Department patrol officer is often the entry point into the juvenile justice system. When a youngster is apprehended for the first time for violating the law, it is the police officer and the Juvenile Unit’s investigator that determine the nature of the offender’s initial involvement with the justice system. When the criminal activity is gang-related, the officers assigned to the Gang Detail become actively involved. All of these activities and functions are included in the mission of the personnel assigned to the Criminal Investigations Section’s Juvenile Unit.

The Criminal Investigations Section’s Juvenile Unit is staffed with dedicated specialists focused on all aspects of the juvenile justice system ranging from processing of juveniles through the legal system to juvenile delinquency deterrence and prevention programs. The collection and analysis of intelligence related to youth gang activities in the City of Miami and providing tailored support to the detectives investigating gang related criminal activity is the responsibility of the Unit’s personnel assigned to the Gang Detail.  With invaluable expertise and experience in a myriad of situations related to youthful offenders and the juvenile justice system, the Juvenile Unit’s investigators are the Department’s focal point for development of policies and procedures related to juveniles and criminal gang activities.
