Special Events

The Special Events Unit is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of police services necessary to ensure public safety for residents and visitors attending special events within the City of Miami. In addition, the Unit oversees the Extra-Duty Employment Program, which includes the monitoring of roadway construction projects, utility maintenance activities, and related operations that temporarily close streets or sidewalks and disrupt the normal flow of vehicular or pedestrian traffic. Extra-duty personnel are assigned to manage and control traffic in the vicinity of these construction sites.
The Special Events Unit is also responsible for the issuance of all permits related to street and sidewalk closures, as well as permits for demonstrations and assemblies. Unit staff work closely with event sponsors to conduct pre-event planning, assess staffing needs, manage required documentation and payroll, and perform post-event evaluations.
